The arboretum also boasts a strong educational component. Soaring high above the city, the arboretum includes 190 acres along with 12 miles of hiking trails. Approximately 2,300 species of trees and shrubs spanning six origins of six continents call the Hoyt Arboretum home. You will find new plants in bloom every time you visit the arboretum. About Your Visit: Hoyt Arboretum is located in Washington Park, a popular gathering place located just two miles from downtown Portland. While it is just a short distance from the city center, you will feel worlds away when you visit the park and its arboretum. You can reach the park by car, bike trails, or on public transportation.

The grounds of the arboretum are open every day from 5 am to 10 pm daily. This gives you plenty of time to enjoy the surroundings. There is no cost to visit the grounds of the arboretum.

Visitor Center Information: You will find the official Visitor Center located at 4000 SW Fairview Blvd. This center is open daily from 10 am to 3 pm. Visitors will enjoy restrooms located in the courtyard, trail maps, and more information to help you to make the most of your visit. You can also download a digital map for your convenience.

Educational Component: The Hoyt Arboretum is dedicated to educating the public through a variety of resources. The Hoyt Arboretum Herbarium (HAH) reference library includes a bevy of pressed and dried plants designed to authenticate and archive the arboretum's collection of trees and shrubs. This library can be accessed by the public with an appointment.

The Garden Explorer plant database offers informative entries for more than 6,300 trees, plants, and shrubs that are currently growing in the arboretum or have in the past. You will find everything that you need to know about each specimen in this database.

Lastly, the Bill DeWeese Library boasts over 800 books and documents about the subject of horticulture and botanical history.
